Kaṃ ghātayati hanti kam: whom would he have killed?
The knower — veda, from √vid again — who knows this as avināśinam, nityam, ajam, avyayam: how can that person ghātayati (cause to be killed, the causative) or hanti (kill)? Two verbs, two degrees of agency, both emptied. Kathaṃ sa puruṣaḥ: how, that person? The question is grammatical. Once the object will not die, the verbs have nowhere to land.
Vedas & Upanishads
Knowledge that changes the status of an act
Bṛhadāraṇyaka 4.4.23: the knower of the self is not stained by action. Īśā 2 lets a person do karma for a hundred years if they know. This verse is the sharp form of that claim: if you have seen what cannot be killed, the verbs "kill" and "have killed" lose their object. The Upanishads call that seeing vidyā. The Gita is still inside that word.

How can that person kill
Plato, Crito
In the Crito, Socrates refuses a harm that would answer a harm, because the self he is caring for is not improved by the blow. Verse 21 asks a colder question: how can the knower kill at all, if the thing he would strike is not there to be struck? Both relocate the agent before they discuss the act.
