कर्मणस् बुद्धिर् । किं मां ॥
jyāyasī cetkarmaṇaste matā buddhirjanārdana | tatkiṃ karmaṇi ghore māṃ niyojayasi keśava ||
Meaning
"If you hold understanding to be better than action, Janārdana — why then do you set me to a terrible action, Keśava?"
"यदि तुम्हारी मान्यता में बुद्धि कर्म से श्रेष्ठ है, जनार्दन — तो फिर मुझे घोर कर्म में क्यों लगाते हो, केशव?"
Word by word
Sanskrit lesson
jyāyasī agrees with buddhi, not with karma
The comparative is feminine because its noun is buddhiḥ. karmaṇaḥ is the ablative you measure against: better than action. Arjuna is handing chapter 2 back to its speaker. He says buddhi, the word of 2.39 and 2.49. He does not say jñāna. That word arrives in the answer, and it is not the same word.
Vedas & Upanishads
śreyas is the word he has not said yet
Kaṭha Upaniṣad 1.2.1–2 sets śreyas, the better, against preyas, the pleasanter, and has the boy choose. Arjuna’s next verse will ask for śreyas by name. This verse is still the complaint: if understanding is the better thing, why the terrible action.
कठोपनिषद् 1.2.1–2 श्रेयस्, जो बेहतर है, को प्रेयस्, जो अधिक प्रिय है, के सामने रखता है, और बालक को चुनने देता है। अर्जुन अगले श्लोक में श्रेयस् का नाम लेंगे। यह श्लोक अभी शिकायत है: यदि बुद्धि बेहतर चीज़ है, तो घोर कर्म क्यों।
