Meaning

"As the unknowing, attached to action, act, Bhārata, so the knowing one should act, unattached, wishing to hold the world together."

"हे भारत, जैसे अविद्वान् कर्म में आसक्त होकर करते हैं, वैसे विद्वान् अनासक्त होकर करे, लोकसङ्ग्रह का इच्छुक।"

Word by word

Sanskrit lesson

The same act, a different verb-mood

yathā … tathā: as the unknowing act, so the knowing one should act. The unknowing get the plain indicative kurvanti. The knowing one gets the optative kuryāt, “he should.” What the eye sees can look the same. The grammar does not. They are saktāḥ, attached, in action. He is asaktaḥ, and cikīrṣuḥ, the desiderative of √kṛ: wishing to do the lokasaṃgraha, the holding-together named in 3.20. avidvāṃsaḥ means “not knowing.” It does not mean “the masses.”

Vedas & Upanishads

Both still act

A familiar Upaniṣadic contrast puts the knower on one road and the one who still acts for a fruit on another. Kaṭha 1.2’s śreyas and preyas are that kind of fork, and 3.2 already used the word śreyas. 3.25 refuses the fork in the outward verb. The unknowing act. The knowing one should act. The difference the line insists on is attachment, the mood of the verb, and a wish aimed at the holding-together of the world — not a withdrawal from action.
